Mason 37, Centerville 19

Mason senior center Michelle Munoz shook off cramps to score six points in the fourth quarter and help the Comets shake off the Elks in a low-scoring Division I district championship game Saturday night at Cintas Center.

The Comets meet Mercy in a regional semifinal at 6:15p.m. Wednesday at Wright State University's Nutter Center.

“Any game that you win, that's all that really counts,” Mason coach Gerry Lackey said. “You just want to play again on Wednesday.”

Munoz finished with a game-high 13 points and was the only player on either team to reach double figures. Junior guard Nicole Stein added nine and senior guard Jere Issenmann chipped in with eight.

Senior guard Kasi Perrin-Carpenter and junior forward Ashley Harris each scored eight to lead Centerville.

Munoz had been held to just seven points when she limped off the court with 2:25 left in the third quarter after a hard spill while being fouled by Centerville junior Jenn Uptmor. She returned with 12.7 seconds left in the third quarter and scored six points during a 9-0 Mason run to open the fourth quarter. The run left the Comets leading, 30-17, before Centerville scored with 2:54 left in the game.

“You just have to be mentally tough and fight against what your body's doing to you,” Munoz said.

The Comets scored the first seven points of the game, a run sparked by Issenmann's 3-pointer just eight seconds into the game.
