Chaminade-Julienne 57, Oak Hills 53


Slow start hurts Highlanders

        Chaminade-Julienne senior guard Jenny Beane scored five points and junior guard Megan Duffy added four during a 15-3 first-quarter run and the Eagles went on to knock off Oak Hills, 57-53, to earn a Division I district championship at Xavier University's Cintas Center Saturday night.

        Beane started the run with a 3-pointer less than two minutes into the game and capped it with driving layup with 30.5 seconds left in the quarter. The run left C-J leading, 17-5.

        Oak Hills senior Jackie Corneilus scored 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to help the Lady Scots, the No.2 team in the Enquirer's Division I coaches' poll, cut the deficit to two points, 55-53, with 30 seconds left, but Duffy hit two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to clinch the win.

        “They're a great defensive team,” Oak Hills coach Jan Wilking said of Chamindade-Julienne. "We couldn't get into the flow in the first quarter.”

        Duffy finished with a game-high 20 points and sophomore Brandie Hoskins added 19 for the Eagles. Junior Danielle Dietrich scored 14 for the Lady Scots.

        The Eagles will play a re gional semifinal at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Columbus Fairgrounds Coliseum.
