Beavercreek 50, Fairfield 40

Alison Bales, a 6-5 sophomore center, scored 27 points as the Beavers, the No.12 team in the country according to USA Today, won a Division I district championship at Xavier University.

Fairfield freshman Wanisha Smith scored eight points in the first quarter, including a 57-foot banked 3-pointer at the buzzer, and the Indians defense held Bales to four second-quarter points as Fairfield took a 20-19 lead at halftime.

But Bales scored Beavercreek's first eight points of the third quarter and the Beavers took advantage of six Fairfield turnovers to open up their largest lead of the game, 39-26, with 14 seconds left in the quarter.

“On paper, this was a mismatch,” Fairfield coach Steve Termeer said. “I think we pretty well carried out our game plan. We wanted to get them to shoot the ball from the perimeter, we were hoping to rebound their missed 3-pointers, and we wanted to try to get a shot on every possession. We struggled with that in the third quarter and, to their credit, they did what they needed to do with the ball in the third quarter. They got the ball to Bales.”

Beavercreek will meet St. Ursula in the regional semifinals at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright State University's Nutter Center.
