Our Fearless Predictions for N.Ky. boys games

By Ray Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        Bishop Brossart at Covington Catholic

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Covington Catholic HS, 1600 Dixie Highway, Park Hills

WHAT TO WATCH: CovCath junior Brian Lewin said Tuesday's 62-61 win over Newport Central Catholic wasn't more than a confidence-builder going into next Tuesday's 35th District tournament game against Ludlow. The Colonels, The Enquirer's top-ranked team, had plenty of reason to be optimistic beforehand. They are 16-1 since a Dec.29 loss to St. Xavier, and Lewin averages 13.9 points a game.

The past month has been ugly for Brossart. The Mustangs are 2-5 since beating Silver Grove for the 10th Region All “A” title on Jan.22.

        PICK: Covington Catholic.

        Conner at Grant County

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Grant County HS, 715 Warsaw Rd., Dry Ridge

WHAT TO WATCH: Look for lots of offense tonight.

Conner brings senior guard Jeremy Stephenson (18 points a game) and senior forward Terry Johnson (15.6). Grant County's Alan Shafer's 21.3 points a game is second in Northern Kentucky behind Silver Grove's Chad McCarter's 23.3. Tyler Jones is the Braves' second-leading scorer at 15.3.

        PICK: Conner.

        Holmes at Simon Kenton

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Simon Kenton HS, 11132 Madison Pike, Independence

WHAT TO WATCH: Both Holmes and Simon Kenton will try to break losing streaks. The Bulldogs have dropped eight of their past nine, while the Pioneers have lost their past two.

Simon Kenton appears to have the statistical edge. Sophomore center Mike Brock and senior guard Jordan Stowers average 15.1 and 14.8 points a game, respectively. Sophomore Brandent Englemon leads Holmes at 12.8.

        PICK: Simon Kenton.

        Boone County at Dixie Heights

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Dixie Heights HS, 3010 Dixie Highway, Edgewood

WHAT TO WATCH: The Dixie Heights (17-8) offense has improved over the past three weeks. Since a 29-26 loss to Holy Cross on Feb.2, the Colonels have averaged 62.6 points a game and are 4-1 during that stretch.

The Boone County offense also has sputtered. The Rebels are 1-4 since Feb.6, and they have scored under 50 points in three games.

        PICK: Dixie Heights.

        OTHER GAMES

        Bellevue over Deming

        Highlands over Holy Cross

        Newport over Ludlow

        Campbell County over Ryle

        Walton-Verona over Carroll County

        Mason County over Pendleton County

        Silver Grove over East Carter

Calvary Christian over Heritage Academy (Saturday)

        Last week: 10-3. Season: 85-25, .773
