Kings planning to expand, improve facilities
By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Kings could have state-of-the-art facilities for football, tennis, baseball and softball within the next three years.
Increasing enrollment has helped render the current facilities in need of expansion and repair. An architect's drawing of the project is prominently displayed in athletic director Gregg Darbyshire's office.
The entire project will be built with private funds, Darbyshire said. We need to raise $2 1/4 million. We plan to start by soliciting businesses.
A 4,000-seat football stadium with an eight-lane track and an adjacent athletic complex will be added.
The project will be in three phases, Darbyshire said. Our goal is to break ground after the final football game next season.
Phase I also will include concession stands, restrooms, a fitness and weight room, and an upgraded scoreboard.
Phase II will include a regulation soccer field with irrigation, lighting and permanent
seating and lighting and new dugouts for the baseball field.
The final phase will include five tennis courts and a renovated softball stadium with lights
BOWLING: Although La Salle struggled to a fifth-place finish in the West Division of the Cincinnati High School Bowling Conference during the regular season, the Lancers peaked in time to win the boys city championship.
Led by Doug Noe, Fred Peterson, Ed Lupp and Nick Sansone, LaSalle defeated Goshen, Loveland and Fairfield to win the lower-bracket title and earn a berth in next week's state tournament in Columbus.
Northwest also earned a spot at state by winning the upper-bracket title with victories over Turpin, Elder and Oak Hills. LaSalle was crowned the city champion for totaling more pins than Northwest during the tournament.
Seton, the West Division third-place finisher during the regular season, emerged as the upper-bracket winner and girls city champion with victories over Norwood, Loveland and McAuley. The Saints will advance to the state tournament.
Fairfield also qualified for state by winning the lower bracket, with victories over Goshen, Turpin and Glen Este. Seton's higher pin count made the Saints the girls city champions.
This was the first season for the league. Expansion is planned next season, with a minimum of 150 teams expected.
