Division II girls district swimming

Wyoming's Reynolds has record day

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

OXFORD — Wyoming senior Michelle Reynolds was responsible for four of the seven meet records broken Saturday at the girls Division II district swimming and diving meet at Corwin Nixon Natatorium.

Reynolds set records in the 100-yard butterfly and 500 freestyle and was a member of Wyoming's winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

“It feels great, but everyone did their part,” Reynolds said. “Now our goal is to do much better at the state meet.”

Wyoming won the meet with 248 1/4 points, followed by Indian Hill (222), Ketter ing Alter (172), Madeira (166) and Mariemont (164).

“We did a lot better than I expected,” Wyoming coach Teresa Wade said. “We had a lot of girls qualify (at sectional) in two events, and they did very well today.”

Wyoming's boys team, also coached by Wade, also fared well, finishing third Friday while sending eight swimmers to state. The girls will send five — and possibly three more if the 400 freestyle relay team qualifies at-large.

Here's a look at each event:

200 Medley relay: Leadoff swimmer Pam Gieseker opened up a two-second lead in the backstroke for Wyoming, and Lindsey Smith's 24.91 in the freestyle gave the Cowboys the victory in 1:52.26.

200 Freestyle: Madeira sophomore Lindsay Bockstiegel's 1:55.07 shattered the district record of 1:57.47 set by Jenny Miller of Madeira.

“I'm ... not fully tapered,” Bockstiegel said.

200 Individual medley: Betsy Jo Brockman, a Williamsburg junior, repeated as district champion in 2:09.14.

“Last year, I was fourth at state, and the only girls to beat me were from Hawken,” Brockman said. “I'm not tapered or shaved, and I'm going after them this week.”

50 Freestyle: Indian Hill sophomore Betsy Carey edged defending district champion Kelly Jones from Kettering Alter 24.43 to 24.55.

“I'm not sure if I'll take time off next week at state,” Carey said.

100 Butterfly: This was a start-to-finish victory for Reynolds. She swam the first 50 yards in 27.38 and closed with a 30.33.

“I did a lot of distance work during practice this week, but next week I'll do sprints,” Reynolds said. “I'm now starting my taper, and I should go faster at state.”

100 Freestyle: This was Carey's second district championship, and in the process, she broke the record of 53.87 set by Meredith Olson last year. She swam the 100 yards in 53.10.

500 Freestyle: Another district record was broken as Reynolds took almost 14 seconds off Mariemont Karen Olson's record of 5:18.51 set last year. She covered the distance in 5:04.67.

200 Freestyle Relay: Wyoming's record-setting meet continued with the Cowboys going 1:41.35. The old mark was Alter's 1:41.91 last year.

100 Backstroke: Stephanie Cline from Springfield Catholic Central came off the pace to edge Wyoming's Gieseker for the championship in 1:00.22.

100 Breaststroke: Alter's Kelly Jones, the state-record holder, was an easy winner, claiming the district in 1:04.41. Her state mark is 1:04.63. Although she eclipsed that time Saturday, state records can be set only at the state meet. 400 Freestyle Relay: Madeira led after the first 100 yards, but Indian Hill rallied behind Jackie Rodriguez, Emily King and Carey to edge the Amazons at the wire, 3:43.08 to 3:43.11.
