Sectional wrestling tournaments begin today

St. Xavier and Fairfield host the local Division I sectional wrestling meets today and Saturday. Divisions II and III begin Saturday at four sites.

After plowing through the GCL tournament last weekend, Moeller is likely to repeat at the St. Xavier site, which includes all the GCL North teams, Elder, LaSalle and St. Xavier.

One potential highlight of the St. Xavier sectional could be a rematch between Moeller's Joe Zinkan and Winton Woods' Ian Ruth.

Ruth is the only area wrestler to beat Zinkan this season, at December's Coaches' Classic tournament. Zinkan finished second in the state last season.

Harrison and Fairfield will battle for the other Division I sectional title. Harrison beat Fairfield in a January dual meet, 36-18 and received the higher team seeding (second to Fairfield's third).

First- and second-round matches will be contested on Friday in Division I with the semifinals and championships scheduled Saturday. The Division II and III tournaments are Saturday only.

The top four wrestlers at each site advance to next week's district tournament.
