Although Mason fell from No.1 to No.2 behind Oak Hills last week, coach Gerry Lackey's Comets (15-5) received 11 first place votes and 192 points to finish in the top spot for the fourth consecutive season.
Oak Hills received nine first place votes and received 191 points to finish second followed by Mercy, Lakota West and Colerain.
It's an honor to be voted No.1, Lackey said. Any team in the top four or five could be considered the best. I don't see how you can judge between us and Oak Hills or us and Mercy.
In fact, Lackey voted Oak Hills No.1, Mason second and Mercy third.
Springboro, winner of 19 of 20 games, emerged as the Division II-III-IV poll champion for the first time. McNicholas finished No.2.
Apparently those voting took into consideration Mason's schedule, not only the Comets 15-5 record the worst since Lackey took over 11 years ago.
Besides losing to undefeated Beavercreek, the No.1 team in the state Associated Press poll, the Comets also played Cleveland East Tech (No.6), Canton McKinley (No.8) and South Euclid Regina (No.1 in Division III).
We probably played the toughest schedule of any team in the state, Lackey said. Two of our losses were to nationally ranked teams.
Returning starters Michelle Munoz (who's headed to Tennessee next fall) and Jere' Issenmann (who's headed to Illinois) carried the scoring burden for the defending Division I state champion Comets.
Springboro, led by juniors Lindsay Wight, Kelsey Sullivan and Becky Ballard, closed the season with a 17-game winning streak. Its only loss was to Division I power Chaminade-Julienne in the third game of the season.
We took a 15-point lead in the first quarter against C-J but couldn't hold it, Springboro coach Rick Creager said.
