Our Fearless Predictions for N.Ky. games

By Ray Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        • Covington Catholic at Scott

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Scott HS, 5400 Old Taylor Mill Rd., Taylor Mill

WHAT TO WATCH: Scott (19-2) has never occupied the top spot in The Enquirer's Northern Kentucky coaches poll, and the Eagles have won their past 11.

CovCath (15-5) is good at breaking winning streaks. The Colonels stopped Conner's nine-game string a month ago.

Tonight's key matchup could be at center, where Scott's Ben Lye brings his 7.3 rebounds a game against CovCath's Chad Wachs' 6.6. Another matchup to watch is Scott's Chris Thompson (17.5 points a game) against CovCath's Bryan Lewin.

        PICK: Scott.

        • Conner at Newport Central Catholic

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Newport Central Catholic HS, 13 Carothers Rd., Newport

WHAT TO WATCH: It didn't help NewCath (18-5 and No.3 in the Enquirer poll) that senior guard Ronny Dawn injured the same ankle last week that kept out him of the Thoroughbreds' early games. He returns tonight after missing two games. Seniors Seth Lynn and Corey Myers made up for Dawn's absence in Tuesday's win over Ryle as they scored 17 points apiece.

Conner's (16-3 and No.4 in the Enquirer poll) six-game win streak ended Tuesday against Campbell County for two reasons. Seniors Jeremy Stephenson and Terry Johnson scored just 11 and nine points, respectively (that's seven and six a game off their averages); and Stephenson managed just four points after the first quarter.

        PICK: NewCath.

        • Dixie Heights at St. Henry

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, St. Henry HS, 3755 Scheben Drive, Erlanger

WHAT TO WATCH: Enquirer No. 7 Dixie Heights (14-7) is 4-1 over its past five games, and the Colonels have allowed 46 points a game over that stretch. In the past three, however, Dixie has averaged just 43 points a game.

St. Henry (11-9), meanwhile, is 7-7 against Ninth Region teams.

Tonight, look for a battle of front lines. Dixie brings junior Joe Bramlage (15.3 points a game), while St. Henry counters with senior Nick Love (14.7 points a game) and junior Jeff Eisenmenger (13.5).

        PICK: Dixie Heights.

        • Campbell County at Holmes

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Holmes HS, corner of Madison Ave. and 25th Street, Covington

WHAT TO WATCH: Campbell County's 65-54 win over Conner Tuesday was the Camels' fifth out of its past seven. Junior forward Kevin Reinhardt's 21.8 points a game is second in Northern Kentucky.

Holmes' fortunes have fallen fast. After a six-game winning streak in December and early January, Holmes has gone 1-7, including a five-game losing streak since Jan. 5.

        PICK: Campbell County.

        • Other games

        Highlands over Boone County
        Simon Kenton over Ryle
        Silver Grove over Dayton
        Fleming County over Pendleton County
        Holy Cross over Lloyd (Saturday)
        Ludlow over Williamstown (Saturday)
        Last week: 5-6. Season: 59-20, .745.
