Our Fearless Predictions for Cincinnati games
By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Elder (12-5, 6-3 GCL South) vs. Moeller (13-4, 7-2 GCL South)
WHEN/WHERE: 8 p.m. today, Moeller High School, 9001 Montgomery Rd., Montgomery.
WHAT TO WATCH: Coming off an upset loss to McNicholas, Elder must quickly regroup.
The Panthers lost to the Crusaders on Jan. 6 at home but upset St. Ignatius, the state's top-ranked team last week.
A Moeller victory would move coach Carl Kremer's team within one win of clinching at least a tie for the GCL South championship.
This will be the final game for Moeller in its diminutive gym which will be replaced by a 1,300 seat facility next season.
Unsung senior center Clint Nagel (8.5 rebounds) will be one of the keys for Moeller. If Nagel controls the inside, Matt Sylvester (21.1 points) can move outside where he's a long-distance threat.
PICK: Moeller.
Oak Hills (14-3, 12-1 GMC) vs. Hamilton (13-4, 11-2 GMC)
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Hamilton High School, 1160 Eaton Ave., Hamilton.
WHAT TO WATCH: Trailing Oak Hills by one game in the Greater Miami Conference, Hamilton faces a must-win situation.
Coach Larry Allen's Big Blue have won with defense all season, including a 55-50 victory over defending state champion St. Xavier last week in Hamilton.
A team without a star, the Big Blue uses defense and a balanced offensive attack. Josh Andrews, Nate Rusbosin, E.J. Underwood, John Smith and Robbie Ballinger are all capable of double figures.
Coach Mike Price's Highlanders will clinch at least a tie for the Greater Miami Conference title with a victory.
Seniors Mike Lee (15.2 points) and Tim Oliverio (13.8) points) are the primary scoring threats, but Oak Hills has outstanding depth.
PICK: Oak Hills.
Withrow (10-5) vs. Western Hills (13-4)
WHEN/WHERE: 8:30 p.m., today, University of Cincinnati's Shoemaker Center, Clifton.
WHAT TO WATCH: The first meeting was a mismatch as Western Hills dominated the Tigers at West Hi.
However, playing on a bigger college floor will be to Withrow's advantage, allowing the Tigers to spread it out and take advantage of superior speed and quickness.
Withrow has the advantage on the perimeter with Will Jeffries and Chris Washington. The Tigers can't pull the upset unless Pierre Darden and Raymond Garth step up on the inside.
There's little doubt Western Hills is one of the most talented teams in Ohio with Danny Horace, Darryl Peterson, Malcolm Andrews and Michael Hadnot.
PICK: Western Hills
Cincinnati Hills Christian (15-1, 12-0 MVC) Academy vs. Cincinnati Country Day (16-1, 12-1 MVC).
WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 today, Cincinnati Country Day, 6905 Given Rd., Indian Hill.
WHAT TO WATCH: Picked to finish third in the Miami Valley Conference, CHCA can clinch at least a tie for its first championship with a victory.
The Eagles feature a balanced scoring attack with guards Jay Morelock and Luke Hitchcock and Luke Trenz, a 6-foot-7 sophomore center on the inside.
CCD is also balanced.
Coach Howard Brownstein's Indians look to T.G. Seward and Matt Cohen with Noah Allen also capable of a big scoring night.
CHCA won the first meeting 55-46 but the task will be more difficult at CCD where the Indians seldom lose.
PICK: CCD.
Purcell Marian (10-7, 5-6 GCL North) vs. Kettering Alter (16-1, 10-1 GCL North)
WHEN/WHERE: 8 p.m. today, Alter High School, 940. E. David Place, Kettering.
WHAT TO WATCH: Although Alter has locked up the Greater Catholic League North Division, the Knights have had trouble beating the Cavaliers in the past.
Adam Waleskowski, a 6-8 senior center who will play for Florida State, leads a tall and talented Alter team.
Purcell Marian counters with Xavier-bound Keith Jackson, a 6-6 center/forward, who is capable of a high-scoring game.
PICK: Alter.
