High school events in N.Ky. this weekend

SWIMMING

Region 4 championships: 4:30 p.m. today (diving) and 11 a.m. Saturday (swimming), Scott HS, 5400 Old Taylor Mill Rd., Taylor Mill

Of note: It's not as easy to advance to the state meet this year. There are only two automatic qualifiers to the state meet Feb. 23-24 in Lexington, plus the top 14 best times in the state.

Notre Dame is the favorite to win the girls team title. The Pandas are ranked third behind six-time defending state champion Louisville Sacred Heart and Lexington Paul Dunbar.

Covington Catholic is the best boys team in the state behind 12-time defending Louisville St. Xavier.

Tonight's diving berths seem sewn up. Notre Dame's Kayla Hanser and Holmes' Robyn Karlage are the girls favorites, and Scott's Zach Niehaus and Ryan Kellerman of St. Henry should take the two boys berths.

Wrestling

Region 3 championships: 10 a.m. Saturday, Fern Creek HS, 9115 Fern Creek Rd., Louisville.

Of note: Campbell County squeaked past Ryle in last week's District 5 meet, but can the Camels do the same against South Oldham on Saturday?

Ryle, Simon Kenton, Louisville Ballard and Louisville Eastern also are contenders.

Individually, Scott senior Jason Daviaux (125 pounds) is trying to become the first Eagle to win four straight district and regional titles.

The top four finishers advance to the state tournament Feb. 16-17 in Frankfort.

Girls basketball

20th Annual Cougar Classic: 2 p.m. today and 9 a.m. Saturday, Calvary Christian School, 5955 Taylor Mill Rd., Covington

Of note: Christian Life Center, Rose Hill Christian and Gahanna (Ohio) Evangel join Calvary Christian.

Here is the schedule: Calvary vs. Christian Life, 2 p.m. today; Rose Hill Christian vs. Evangel, 3:30 p.m. today; Consolation, 9 a.m. Saturday; and the championship game, 1 p.m. Saturday.

Boys basketball

Cougar Classic: 5 p.m. today and 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Calvary Christian School, 5955 Taylor Mill Rd., Covington

Of note: Christian Life Center, Rose Hill Christian and Gahanna (Ohio) Evangel join Calvary Christian.

Here is the schedule: Gahanna Evangel vs. Christian Life, 5 p.m. today; Rose Hill Christian vs. Calvary Christian, 6:30 p.m. today; Consolation, 10:30 a.m. Saturday; and the championship game, 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
