Our Fearless Predictions for N.Ky. games

By Ray Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer

        • Conner at Highlands

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Highlands HS, 2400 Memorial Parkway, Fort Thomas

WHAT TO WATCH: Conner brings a 14-2 record and four straight wins to Fort Thomas. Highlands is 13-4 overall and 5-1 in its past six games.

Tonight's questions: can Conner's offense maintain its 71 points a game average?; and can the Cougars prevent Highlands sophomore center Ross Neltner from having another big game. Neltner scored 29-points and pulled down 16 rebounds against Ryle on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-7 Neltner leads the Bluebirds with 10.5 rebounds a game, and his 16.8 point average is second to senior forward Gino Guidugli's 18.6.

Conner counters with Jeremy Stephenson (16.8 points a game) and Terry Johnson (15.9).

        PICK: Highlands.

        • St. Henry at Covington Catholic

WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. Saturday, Covington Catholic HS, 1600 Dixie Highway, Park Hills

WHAT TO WATCH: Tuesday's 57-54 loss to Dixie Heights ended CovCath's 10-game winning streak, and it was just the fourth time this season the Colonels scored fewer than 60 points.

St. Henry (10-8) needs more offense. The Crusaders have averaged 59.1 points a game, but just 45.3 in their past three games.

        PICK: Covington Catholic.

        • Simon Kenton at Scott

WHEN/WHERE: 7 p.m. Saturday, Scott HS, 5400 Old Taylor Mill Rd., Taylor Mill

WHAT TO WATCH: Look for lots of scoring. Simon Kenton's 71.9 points a game is second to Silver Grove in Northern Kentucky, while Scott's 70.1 is fourth.

        PICK Scott.

        • Dixie Heights at Holy Cross

WHEN/WHERE: 7:30 p.m. today, Holy Cross HS, 3617 Church St. Covington

WHAT TO WATCH: Dixie Heights is playing some of its best basketball of the season. Sophomore center Doug Jones scored a career-high 19 points against CovCath on Tuesday. The Colonels handed CovCath its first loss to a Northern Kentucky team. The win was Dixie's third straight and improved its record to 13-6 overall.

Tonight, Dixie begins a five-game road trip between now and Feb.20, But the Colonels are 8-3 away from Edgewood.

Holy Cross plays four of its next five games at home. Thought the Indians are 6-10 overall, they are 3-2 in their past five games.

        PICK: Dixie Heights.

        • Other games

        Calvary Christian over Villa Madonna
        Ludlow over Dayton
Newport Central Catholic over Bowling Green
        St. Henry over Lloyd
        Carroll County over Grant County
