Warren gives more to seniors

LEBANON Warren County will provide $66,847 more this year to whittle down a list of about 250 elderly residents who need in-home and transportation help, county commissioners decided Thursday.
I wish we had more money to spend, Commissioner Pat South said. I can't think of a better way to spend our money.
Commissioners already had agreed to give Warren County Community Services $200,000 for elderly services this year in addition to $458,000 to match federal funds. Community Services and the Southwest Ohio Council on Aging had sought a total of $834,000 from the county to cut the waiting list in half.
Thursday's action brings the county's funding for el derly services including help with housework, bathing and transportation to $725,000.
It's a nice increase, said Bob Logan, chief executive officer of the Council on Aging. We can start serving the elderly on our waiting list. ... If we find we need more money, we'll come back to the commissioners.
Community Services' request was part of a proposal to bring county funding to $1.36 million by 2003, which would eliminate the waiting list for services, Community Services Director Larry Sargeant said. He worked up the plan after the commissioners said they were reluctant to support a proposed elderly services levy.
I feel sure the money is going to take a big bite out of the waiting list, Commissioner Larry Crisenbery said.
