Chao likely to coast at hearing

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Kentuckian and Labor Secretary-designate Elaine Chao is looking forward to her Senate confirmation hearing this week.

And why not? Ms. Chao, unlike Attorney General nominee John Ashcroft, isn't expected to face much controversy.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee plans to listen to Ms. Chao on Wednesday and ask about her plans for the Cabinet post.

Democrats also will want to hear Ms. Chao's views on enforcing workplace safety laws and other worker-oriented laws.
