Tami Ransom and Jayme Cramer are two of Cincinnati's best swimmers and both helped their teamsto championships in the 18th annual Southwest Ohio Swimming and Diving Classic.

An Ursuline senior, Ransom won the 200 individual medley and took second in the 200 breaststroke Sunday as the Lions compiled 684 1/2 points to easily outdistance surprising Centerville (417 1/2) and St. Ursula (385).

Cramer, a St. Xavier senior, set a Classic record in winning the 200 butterfly in 1:50.09. He also took first in the 200 backstroke and was a member of two winning relay teams.

St. Xavier easily won the team event with 745 points to Centerville's 504 1/2.

“Jayme's ahead of where he was last year at this time,” St. Xavier coach Jim Brower said. “He is tired and his best event was last night in the 500 freestyle.”

The defending state 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke champion, Cramer is expected to lead St. Xavier to a record 23rd state title in February.

“Tonight was our best session,” Brower said. “I saw a lot of inconsistencies and we need a lot of work on the turns.”

Ursuline coach Tim Beerman used the Classic to assess his swimmers.

“We had a lot of nice swims where the girls took time off,” Beerman said. “Hopefully, all the yardage and work they've put in will pay off.”

The Classic title was St. Xavier's 18th consecutive. Ursuline claimed a fourth consecutive championship.

SOPHOMORE STARS: any of the Classic races are not contested at high school meets, including the 1,650-yard freestyle. ,

Ursuline sophomore Margy Keefe easily won the mile event in a time of 17:09.52.

“The mile is my best event and I'd love to see it added as a high school race,” Keefe said.

Keefe finished second in the 500 freestyle Saturday and expects to compete in the event at the sectional along with the 200 freestyle.

“We have so much depth and it's so hard to make it,” Keefe said.

KROEGER WINS: Nicole Kroeger appeared out of the 100 freestyle after 50 yards, but the 15-year-old Oak Hills sophomore came on strong to win it in 53.70.

“I'm a back-half swimmer,” said Kroeger, who finished sixth in the 100 freestyle at state last year. “I know what to expect at state this year. I hope to do much better.”

Kroeger also came from well off the pace to win the 200 backstroke in 2:11.60.

KAUSCHER FAST: Rob Kauscher sent a clear message in winning the 100 breaststroke in 58.59.

Swimming the first 50 in 27.64, Kauscher cruised home in 30.95, barely falling short of the Classic record of 58.27.
