Selecting The Cincinnati Enquirer's Division I Player of the Year was tougher than usual.

Many coaches cited Battle's courageous effort in the opening game against Elder. Battle, not expected to play because of a knee injury, entered the game after Elder scored on its opening drive and provided leadership and confidence as Colerain won 14-7.

As for Jones, Moeller coach Steve Klonne said the junior quarterback was average against the Crusaders during a preseason scrimmage but was Cincinnati's best by midseason.

Coach of the Year honors in Division I go to Ed Youngs of Western Hills. He directed the Mustangs to a 9-2 record and their first appearance in the playoffs.

        Other honors:

        • Senior Mike Way, who rushed for 1,822 yards and scored 31 touchdowns, is Divisions II-IV player of the year.

        • Williamsburg's Jason Bainum, who took most snaps from the shotgun position, rushed for 3,046 yards while scoring 214 points. Bainum is Divisions V-VI Player of the Year.

        • Zach Taylor, who instilled a winning attitude at Glen Este, took Division II Coach of the Year honors.

        • During 32 years as head coach at New Richmond, Ron Bird's teams have compiled a 197-111-5 record, while earning the respect of fellow coaches and hundreds of players.

If ever a coach deserved to be recognized, it's Bird, who is Division III Coach of the Year.

        • Blanchester's George Rise takes Division IV Coach of the Year honors, while Reading's Ken Minor is tops in Divisions V-VI.
