Female apprentice wins Turfway rider title

Enquirer staff and wire reports

Apprentice Kris Prather, 21, won Turfway Park's Holiday meet leading rider title with a 26-to-20 win margin over veteran Bill Troilo.

The title was the first for Prather, who won the first race of her career in September at Kentucky Downs. She is only the second woman in Turfway's 41-year history to win a leading riding title. Jockey Patricia Cooksey, the only other leading female rider, holds four titles at the Florence track.

“I'm happy,” Prather said. “I had told everybody I was going to be leading rider. I'm glad it worked out that way. I was lucky. Now, it's time to focus on the Winter/Spring meet.”

Prather scored her first stakes victory aboard 2-year-old Daring Pegasus in the $60,000 Turfway Park Prevue Stakes Dec.23. Angel Montano Sr. won his second Holiday meet trainer's title with five victories, one more than three others.

First post today is 1:10 p.m. The new meet will continue through April 5 and will be highlighted by the 30th Grade II $600,000 Spiral Stakes March 24. Live racing will be conducted Wednesday through Sunday. With few exceptions, first post will be 6p.m. on weeknights and 1:10 p.m. on weekends.
