Some protein bars just glorified candy

By David Patania

Question: What is your opinion of protein bars?

Answer: Protein bars can be pretty helpful in between meals or when you miss a meal. There are different kinds of protein bars for different needs. For example, there are bars that are high in carbohydrates and calories for people who engage in endurance activities such as running and bars that are high in protein and low in sugar and calories for people trying to manage their weight or stay lean.

With so many of these bars on the market, there are a lot of protein bars that are nothing more than glorified candy bars. To make sure that you are actually eating a protein bar, carefully read labels to find a bar that suits your needs.

Q: What is a safe amount of weight to lose per week?

A: Studies have shown that a safe amount of weight to lose per week is right around 2 to 2 1/2 pounds. It has been found that a loss of more weight than 2 to 2 1/2 pounds is just loss of muscle mass and water that will return once normal eating patterns are practiced. The figure given (2 to 2 1/2 pounds) is the amount of weight that a normal adult can lose per week that can be kept off permanently if moderate eating and activity patterns are adhered to.

Q: Where can I get my body fat measured?

A: Wellness centers, YMCAs, hospital fitness centers and any general health club will have staff members that can measure your body fat for you. Prices vary from place to place but a good range would be $10-35 for a quick assessment.
