I-71 sign marks the spot
By Walt Schaefer
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Question: Southbound Interstate 71 at Dana Avenue there are two Cincinnati corporation signs, one large, one small, some 20 yards apart. Why two? Which one is the actual corporation limit? John S. Dowlin, Sharonville
Answer: Kim Patton, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation, said the green sign attached to a railroad overpass denotes the actual city of Cincinnati corporation line. A smaller blue and white sign on the side of the road about 500 feet farther south was placed by the
city to welcome visitors. It is inside the city limits and reads: Welcome to Cincinnati, Settled 1788, All-American City.
Q: Why isn't there a yield light or sign where Hickory Creek Drive in Anderson Township meets Ohio 32 just east of Newtown? Ohio 32 is a two-lane road with a 50-mph speed limit complicated by traffic coming down a hill from Mount Carmel. - Don Diebold, Anderson Township
A. The traffic inspection section of ODOT reviewed records at this intersection and found there were only four reported accidents in the last three years. Measurements indicate there is a 500-foot sight distance at the location more than required. Therefore, ODOT officials see no need to install a yield sign or light, Mrs. Patton said.
Q. At the northwest corner of Montgomery Road and Dana Avenue, it appears a future rounding of the corner is intended. A fence has been moved back and wires on a utility pole have been moved, but nothing else has taken place. Traffic movement has changed in the area because of Xavier University's new Cintas Center. Do plans include better road alignment for westbound Dana traffic? - Erwin Hoffman, Hyde Park
A. The city plans a minor road improvement project to better align Dana Avenue as it passes Montgomery Road, Cincinnati Traffic Engineer Steve Bailey said. The work is planned for the 2001 construction season and should be completed next fall.
