Snow falls on parts of Ky.
By The Associated Press
Kentucky's first snow this season dumped more than half-foot accumulations from the Appalachian foothills to the Tennessee border. A meteorologist called it one of the heaviest early snows in years.
As much as 8 inches of snow fell during the weekend from Lee County in east-central Kentucky to McCreary County along the Tennessee line, the National Weather Service said Sunday.
Smaller accumulations fell across much of Kentucky, though all snowfall ended by midday Sunday.
The wintry weather made highways slick and hazardous. Police in Jefferson County said slick conditions caused hundreds of accidents. In Logan County, an icy road caused an accident that injured four people.
Jon Pelton, a weather service meteorologist in Jackson, said the snowfall amounts were comparable to an early December storm in 1995. He said this snowfall was one of the heaviest early-season snows in 20 years.
In McCreary County, crews were busy clearing highways, authorities said. Slick conditions caused many motorists to slide off roadways, but no serious accidents occurred.
Elsewhere in southeastern Kentucky, 5 to 6 inches fell in Pulaski and Laurel counties and 4 to 5 inches in Whitley County. In eastern Kentucky, up to 6 inches fell in Breathitt, Jackson and Knott counties. Between 3 and 5 inches fell in Owsley and Perry counties.
In south-central Kentucky, 4 to 6 inches fell in Lincoln County, 4 to 5 inches fell in Taylor County and 3 to 5 inches in Casey County. In central Kentucky, 4 inches fell in Fayette County.
The snowfall should melt today, when highs are forecast to reach into the 40s.
