Four who stand in Williams' way
By Mike Mudd
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati's Ricardo Williams Jr. is starting his professional career at 135 pounds (lightweight). Here's a look at some of the top boxers in that division:
Jose Luis Castillo, Mexico: Holds WBC title and now considered top in the division. Was virtual unknown until June, when he beat former top 135-pounder Stevie Johnston of Denver in a controversial split decision. Retained title this fall when he fought Johnston to a draw.
Stevie Johnston: Former WBC champion. Was considered by many boxing analysts to be a top 10 pound-for-pound fighter before losing to Castillo. Has talked about retiring since failing to win the rematch. He's a quick left-hander, like Williams Jr., with solid power in both hands. Has had TV appeal, appearing on HBO and ESPN
Paul Spadafora, Pittsburgh: Holds IBF title. Entertaining style includes an aggressive, straight-ahead strategy that usually equals lots of action. This has helped earn him more exposure on both HBO and ESPN.
Angel Manfredy, Gary, Ind.: Has fought for numerous titles in three weight divisions, but now has settled at 135. Doesn't currently hold a championship but is a popular foe for many fighters because his fights almost always end up on TV. Good, solid boxer with a big heart. Lack of big punch and weak chin are his downfalls. Colorful personality he used to wear a devil mask into the ring a draw for casual fans.
