Elder 70, Westland 51

New-look Panthers show balance, mettle

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Elder basketball team that was unveiled this weekend with wins over St. Henry and Galloway Westland looks a lot different than Panther squads of the past 15 years.

HOOPS CLASSIC
  (At XU's Cintas Center)
  FRIDAY
  • Princeton 64, Moeller 61
  • Purcell Marian 61, Holy Cross 42
St. Xavier 58, Withrow 47

  SATURDAY
  •Lakota West 73, Mason 63
  • Springfield South 45, Hamilton 38
  • NewCath 39, Bishop Brossart 38
  • Elder 70, Westland 51
  • LaSalle 59, Colerain 46
  • Winton Woods 56, McNicholas 55
Rather than feature an outstanding scorer such as Chad Kamstra or the Kelsey brothers, Mike and Pat, the Panthers are a scrappy group with no standouts.

For the second consecutive night, the Panthers used balanced scoring, a tough defense and strong rebounding to defeat Westland 70-51 Saturday in the i-wireless Invitational at the Cintas Center.

Senior guard Mike Mahon scored 15 points, all from 3-point range, to lead the Panthers with Tim Schenke (13) and Scott Benken (13) also in double figures.

“We play together very well and have good balance,” Mahon said.

“Our strength is that we have no stars,” Elder coach Joe Schoenfeld said. “Last night (Friday) we had four players in double figures and tonight three. This should be the story all year.”

Elder's Phil Bengel, a 6-foot-7, 220 pound senior, scored seven points and pulled off eight rebounds.

“Most of the starters are seniors and are much smarter and play as a team,” Schoenfeld said. “More guys can play, which gives us great depth.”

Elder opens league play on Friday against Chaminade-Jullienne in Dayton.

        Galloway Westland (51) -- Kautz 0-2 1-4 1, Nye 1-9 0-0 2, Church 6-13 2-3 14, Kniss 1-1 -1 2, Bohr -5 3-3 5, Bell 8-14 3-4 22, Hall 0-0 1-2 1, DeLong 0-1 0-0 0, Wright 2-2 0-0 4, Rittgers 0-1 0-2 0, Kable 0-2 0-0 0. Totals: 19-50 10-19 51.

        Elder (70) -- Bazeley 3-8 3-3 9, Turner 0-1 2-2 2, Benken 5-6 3-3 13, Schenke 6-10 1-3 13, Wellendorf 1-2 0-0 2, Poland 1-1 0-0 2, Mahon 5-10 0-0 15, Wiehe 1-4 1-2 3, Kroeger 2-3 0-0 4, Bengel 3-7 1-2 7. Totals: 27-52 11-15 70.

        Galloway ....... 10  14  11  16—51

        Elder ....... 15  20  17  18—70

        3-pointers: E—Mahon 5, Wiehe. G—Bell 3. Records: E 2-0, G 1-1.
