Reading-Brookville scouting report

        • Who: Reading (10-2) vs. Brookville (11-1) • What: Division V region final

        • When/Where: 7 p.m. today, Centerville Stadium, 500 East Franklin St., Centerville.

        • Tickets: $5

        • Seating: 8,000

        • Last week: Reading defeated Fairbanks 50-8. Brookville defeated Paint Valley 35-20.

        • Key players: Reading: tailback DeShawn Wynn (1,840 yards rushing, 25 TDs); quarterback Zach Maxfield (998 yards passing); receiver Charlie Vample (30 receptions). Brookville: running backs Sam Sampson (1,043 yards), Randy Hubley (1,330 yards) and Kevin Roger (1,005 yards); quarterback: Tony Brown.

        • What to watch: Reading's defense will be put to the test by a Brookville offense that prefers keeping the ball on the ground and averages only four passes a game.

Sampson, an all-Southwest District tailback, triggers a Brookville offense that features three backs who have rushed for more than 1,000 yards. Brookville also averaged 323 yards rushing and 38 points in 12 games.

Brookville's defensive line stands knee to knee with no gaps. Reading usually runs straight ahead but is capable of running to the outside.

But defense isn't Brookville's strong suit, especially against the pass. Reading allowed Paint Valley 278 yards through the air in a 35-20 victory last week.

Although Wynn is Reading's major offensive weapon, it appears Maxfield must complete some early passes to spread Brookville's defense.

The winner advances to next week's Division V state semifinals against an opponent to be named Sunday by the OHSAA.
