Highlands 49, Covington Catholic 27

Hamblen sets state record with 26th TD

Highlands jumped out to a 49-0 lead, and Brett Hamblen set a state record as the Bluebirds beat Covington Catholic 49-27 in the Class AAA second-round game Friday.

Hamblen's second-quarter touchdown (a 22-yard pass from Gino Guidugli) was his 26th of the season, which broke the single-season state record of 25 set by Lexington Catholic's Clay Wolforde in 1999.

Hamblen finished the game with four catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns — one receiving and one on a punt return.

Highlands' Eammonn Mueller carried the ball 11 times for 63 yards and three touchdowns. Guidugli was 13-of-20 passing for 228 yards. Kevin Mulroney caught three passes for 86 yards.

CovCath scored its first touchdown of the game with 1:06 left in the third quarter. T.R. Rose scored two of the Colonels' four TDs — a 33-yard pass from Brian Meade and a 24-yard blocked punt return.

Highlands outgained CovCath 362-241 in total yards.

Highlands will play Harrison County for the regional championship next week.
