Edgewood 32, Glen Este 13

Cougars get past injuries

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

TRENTON — Playing without four starters and with a substitute quarterback, Edgewood didn't miss a beat in a 32-13 victory over the Glen Este Trojans before a crowd of 4,000 at Cougar Stadium.

Edgewood advancesto the Division II regional semifinals next week against Vandalia Butler. The site will be announced Sunday by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.

Players out for the season are Ryan Moore (defensive tackle), Scott Traufler (offensive line), Blake Cripe (linebacker) and Evan Wirtley (leading receiver and defensive back).

“This team is a tribute to a program that starts at the pee-wee level,” Edgewood coach Steve Channell said. “The kids wait for an opportunity to play and they're ready.”

Kevin Marcum, a 6-foot-3 junior who took over for injured starting quarterback Brandon Osborne (broken thumb), engineered an Edgewood Wing-T offense that generated 395 yards.

“I was nervous tonight and fumbled on the first play” Marcum said. “I told the offensive line that it was my fault. The fumble settled me down and I wasn't nervous from that point.”

Although the Cougars fell behind 7-0 in the first quarter after the fumble, the outcome was never in doubt after Edgewood scored on its next three possessions for 22-7 advantage.

“I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage,” Channell said. “Our overall team speed on offense and defense was also a factor.”

Fullback Matt Moore (141 yards rushing on 20 carries) scored twice, and tailback Ryan White (156 yards rushing) also reached the end zone twice. Osborne, playing with a soft cast, caught the only pass for 58 yards.

“There's no way they can keep me out of the lineup,” said Osborne, who started at quarterback the past three years. “I had the cast removed today, and it was heavily taped tonight.”

Osborne's reception came in the second quarter with Edgewood leading 16-7 and set up a one-yard run by Moore for a 23-7 halftime lead.

Edgewood's defense took control in the second half, limiting the Trojans to 51 yards in the second half, 40 coming on the final drive that ended with a TD at the final buzzer.
