Teacher charged in Net sex sting

A Columbus schoolteacher arrested in an Internet sex sting was identified Sunday as Stephan Ballmann, 49, a physical education teacher at Dunloe Elementary School.

Mr. Ballmann was arrested at 7:21 p.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn on West Eighth Street in Queensgate.

He is charged with one count of attempted disseminating matter harmful to a juvenile and attempted corruption of a minor. Both charges are fifth-degree felonies.

Police say that Mr. Ballmann thought he was meeting a teen he met on the Internet, and that he sent sexually explicit material through an Internet chat room.

They say he spoke several times with someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl. But the person he corresponded with was actually a Hamilton County sheriff's investigator. The investigation began on Oct. 13.
