Big schools take spotlight tonight

The Ohio football playoffs continue with Divisions I, III and V tonight. Eleven area teams are in action, with eight in Division I. Here are previews of tonight's games:

        • FAIRFIELD (7-3) vs. MOELLER (9-1)

        • When: 7 p.m. today

        • Where: Galbreath Field, Kings Island Drive, Mason

        • Tickets: $5 at gate

        • Seating: 11,000

        • Key Players: Moeller: tailback Marcus Blanks (1,850 yards rushing); quarterback Tony Cunningham (1,138 yards passing); receivers Ryan Hamby (37 receptions for 583 yards). Fairfield: tailback Earl Haynes (975 yards rushing); quarterback Brett Pogozalski (1,822 yards passing); receivers John Spurlock (41 receptions for 732 yards) and Ronnie West (23 receptions for 359 yards).

        • What to watch: Two of Fairfield's three losses came when Haynes was out of the lineup with a badly sprained ankle. With Haynes in the backfield, Pogozalski is more effective and the Indians' offense is explosive.

Like Fairfield, Moeller also has a one-two punch in Blanks and Cunningham, along with a good group of receivers.

Both teams feature a diverse offense, with Moeller having a more experienced line. The Crusaders also have the advantage on the defensive side of the ball, which could be the difference.

        • ELDER (6-3) vs. LEBANON (10-0)

        • When: 7 p.m. today

        • Where: Lebanon Stadium, 160 Miller Road, Lebanon

        • Tickets: $5 at gate

        • Seating: 3,500

        • Key Players: Elder: tailback Kyle Koester (1,474 yards rushing); quarterback Matt Scholl (1,277 yards passing); receiver Eric Renzenbrink (32 receptions for 448 yards). Lebanon: Quarterback Charlie Rittgers (1,622 yards passing); receivers Ty Merchant (45 receptions for 781 yards) and Nick Resetar (233 yards); tailback Danny Johnson (1,379 yards rushing).

        • What to watch: Lebanon will spread the field and use a wide-open offense, triggered by Rittgers, and a good group of receivers.

Lebanon's biggest problem centers around a lack of size on the defensive side of the ball and on the offensive line.

Tackling the 6-foot-1, 240-pound Koester and containing Scholl could take their toll on the Warriors in the second half.

        • WESTERN HILLS (9-1) vs. ST. XAVIER (7-3)

        • When: 7 p.m. today

        • Where: Tom Ballaban Stadium, St. Xavier High School, 600 North Bend Road, Finneytown.

        • Tickets: $5 at gate

        • Seating: 4,500

        • Key Players: St. Xavier: quarterback Marty Mooney (1,85 yards passing); receivers Josh Williams (42 receptions for 719 yards) and Brad Greiwe (26 receptions for 480 yards); tailback Enye Willingham (646 yards rushing). Western Hills: tailbacks Kevin Furlow (1,204 yards rushing) and D'Andre Lewis; quarterback Dante Little; receiver Taurean Stephens.

        • What to watch: If St.Xavier takes Western Hills lightly, it could be the end of the season for a Bombers team that has played well the final three weeks of the season.

Mooney is the key for the St. X offense, but it's the Bombers defense that must regroup after allowing Anderson more than 450 yards in the season finale.

Western Hills prefers keeping the ball on the ground with Furlow running inside and outside.

If Little has another good passing game and the defense continues to play well, the Mustangs could pull the upset over the Bombers.

        • ANDERSON (8-2) vs. COLERAIN (10-0)

        • When: 7 p.m. today

        • Where: Colerain Stadium, 8801 Cheviot Road, Colerain Township

        • Tickets: $5 at gate

        • Seating: 4,000

        • Key Players: Colerain: quarterback Sean Jones (756 rushing and 1,002 passing); tailback Jon Mohr (1,248 yards rushing); receiver Doug Monaghan (22 receptions for 526 yards). Anderson: quarterback Kenny Riddell (1,440 passing and 989 rushing); tailback Kenny Rod (989 rushing, 170 reciving); receiver: J.D. Collar (493 receiving).

        • What to watch: Anderson's wide-open, spread-the-field, no-huddle offense gave St. Xavier's defense fits last week and could also cause problems for Colerain.

Riddell is one of the key players for an Anderson team that continues to improve offensively every game.

The key for Anderson is its defense.

If the Redskin defenders don't stop the potent option offense run by Jones, the offense won't be on the field enough to put points on the scoreboard.

        Division III

        • PURCELL MARIAN (7-3) vs. GALLIA ACADEMY (8-2)

        • When: 7 p.m. today

        • Where: Gallia Academy, Rt. 7, Gallipolis

        • Tickets: $5 at gate

        • Seating: 3,500

        • Key Players: Purcell Marian: quarterback Adam White; tailbacks Justin Blackley (1,095 yards rushing) and Vince Berry (742 yards rushing). Gallia Academy: quarterback Dave Broder (1,412 yards); tailback John Lawhon (471 yards); fullback Ike Simmons (1,633 yards); receiver Josh Perry (28 receptions for 456 yards).

        • What to watch: Home-field advantage will be important with more than 5,000 fans expected. The three hour bus drive to Gallipolis could also take its toll on Purcell Marian.

Gallia runs a diversified offense with the run the first option. Broder has completed more than 60 percent of his passes.

Purcell Marian's running attack is outstanding with Blackley and Vince Berry, but quarterback Adam White must complete some passes or it will be a long drive back to Cincinnati.

        • LOGAN ELM (8-2) vs. NEW RICHMOND (10-0)

        • When: 7 p.m. today

        • Where: New Richmond Stadium, New Richmond-Bethel Road, New Richmond.

        • Tickets: $5 at gate

        • Seating: 3,000

        • Key Players: New Richmond: quarterback Matt Armbruster (861 yards rushing); fullback Matt Godsey (770 yards rushing); tailback John McMonigle (959 yards rushing). Logan Elm: quarterback Bobby Stevens (459 yards passing); tailback Matt Colopy (1,435 yards rushing); receiver: Phil Joseph 16 receptions).

        • What to watch: A big physical team, Logan Elm relies on a grind-it-out offense behind a big line. They throw an average of five passes a game and seldom vary from the game plan.

New Richmond is also a running team. This game will probably be low scoring and decided in the trenches.

        Division V

        • COLUMBUS ACADEMY (9-1) vs. READING (8-2)

        • When: 7 p.m. today

        • Where: Reading Stadium, Reading.

        • Tickets: $5 at gate

        • Seating: 4,500

        • Key Players: Reading: tailback DeShawn Wynn (1,346 rushing); quarterback Zach Maxfield (992 passing); receiver: Charlie Vample. Columbus Academy: quarterback Andre Dunn (630 yards rushing); tailback Scott Smith (909 yards rushing, 10 TD's); fullback Mike Jones (877 yards rushing, 17 TDs).

        • What to watch: Primarily a running team, Columbus Academy features a big offensive line that dominated nine opponents. The Vikings feature Nick Reis, a senior kicker capable of 50 yard field goals.

Reading is a diversified offensive team with quarterback Zach Maxfield directing the attack with tailback DeShawn Wynn a major contributor.

If Reading's defense can't slow down Columbus Academy's option offense, it could be a long night for a Blue Devil team that is co-champions in the Cincinnati Hills League.
