Upstarts Oak Hills, Harrison join volleyball elite

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

The district volleyball tournament, dominated for years by Girls Greater Cincinnati League teams, has a new look this season.

Oak Hills and Harrison, upset winners Saturday over St. Ursula and Ursuline respectively, will join Seton, Mercy, McAuley and Mount Notre Dame in Division I play at Wright State University beginning Wednesday.

“We were nervous playing a program like St. Ursula,” Oak Hills coach Chet Cox said. “The kids could have folded but they played with a lot of heart. The match could have gone either way.”

The five Division I district championship games will be played either Wednesday or Thursday. Division II-III-IV is set for Saturday's marathon session.

GIRLS SOCCER: Sectional Division I and II semifinal games are tonight. The championships are Thursday.

With defending Division I state champion Lakota West eliminated last week, the tournament is wide open.

In Division II, Indian Hill, Roger Bacon, McNicholas Badin, Cincinnati Country Day and Mariemont all are capable of winning.

BOYS SOCCER: St. Xavier is the only unseeded team remaining in the Division I sectional tournament with all of the seeded teams alive in Division II and III remaining.

Semifinal Division III action is scheduled for Tuesday followed by Division I and II on Wednesday at neutral sites.

The six sectional championship games will be contested on Saturday with the winners advancing to the District tournament.

CROSS COUNTRY: Troy Memorial Stadium is the site for the Division I, II and III regional tournaments on Saturday.
