Lakota West, Fenwick dominate district golf

By Dave Goldstein
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MIDDLETOWN — Frost delayed start times for more than an hour in Thursday's boys golf District championships, but it had little success in cooling off Lakota West and Middletown Fenwick.

Both schools won convincingly at Weatherwax. Lakota West shot a 308 to win the Division I competition by seven strokes. Fenwick shot a 316 to win the Division III competition by 11 strokes.

“I saw a lot of missed three-footers at the beginning, but I just told our guys to hang in there,” Lakota West coach Jack Buhi said. “All year our guys have given better efforts on the back, and staying focused has been a key for us. The guys definitely did that today.”

Centerville's Andy Von Derau took individual honors in Division I with a 74, but his team did not move on.

“I'm excited to advance, but I'm just really disappointed that the rest of the team couldn't do as well as we'd hoped,” Von Derau said.

“I didn't do as well as I wanted to at state last year, so hopefully I can take a few strokes off this time around.”

Division III runner-up Summit Country Day boasted the top individual, with Wes Homan firing a 75.

Lakota West will advance to next weekend's state championships, along with St. Xavier and Miamisburg, both of which shot 315. Oak Hills barely missed out, firing a 316.

In Division III, only two teams qualify for state, so Fenwick and Summit CD will move on.

Von Derau will be joined at state by Oak Hills' Kevin Vollmer and Hamilton's Eddie Bake,r who shot 75 and 76, respectively. Baker, competing in district as an individual, had to win a one-hole playoff to advance.

Buhi, who has coached at Lakota for 31 years, said this squad could be the best and deepest he's had, saying that he easily could have substituted in his sixth player and gotten similar results.

“Two years ago we finished ninth at state and last year we finished fourth, so we're hoping to improve on that,” Buhi said. “I think we have as good a chance as anybody.”
