Morris' 72 lifts Oak Hills to sectional golf title
Oak Hill senior Joe Morris shot an even-par 72 to lead the Highlanders to the Cincinnati West sectional Division I championship Wednesday at Miami Whitewater Golf Course.
The victory advances Oak Hills to next week's District Tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course, along with Fairfield (302), St.Xavier (315) and La Salle (323).
Last year, Joe shot a 74 at the sectional meet, Oak Hills coach Randy Owen said. He's averaging about 39 or 40 for nine holes but always seems to step up in the big tournaments.
John Clodfelder and Ross Goodson came through with 76s for Oak Hills. Ben Phalen (73) and Tony Bosken (75) led Fairfield.
Everybody knew what they had to do, and that was cover each other, Owen said. Kevin Volmer didn't have a good day. We covered for him. That's the way we've played all year.
Fairfield coach Steve Kessler was satisfied with the second-place finish.
We qualified the past two years with a score about 319 or 320, Kessler said. It didn't surprise me what Oak Hills shot.
Three Cincinnati-area golfers qualified as individuals in the Dayton Division I sectional at Kitty Hawk Golf Course.
Tom Coffing from Middletown was co-medalist with a 72, while Lemon Monroe's Dustin Talbot and Adam Lawson from Edgewood fired 75s to make it.
GIRLS SOCCER: Seton took another step toward claiming the Girls Greater Cincinnati League soccer championship with a 3-0 victory over Roger Bacon. The Saints are now 11-0-1 overall and 6-0-1 in the GGCL Scarlet Division.
McAuley (5-1-1) remained one game behind Seton with a 3-0 victory over Mount Notre Dame.
FOOTBALL: Moeller's football team climbed from 41st to 35th in Fox Sports Net's Fox Fab 50.
