Pig Parade: Elvis Pigsley

Pig's heart true to 'The King'

By Owen Findsen
The Cincinnati Enquirer

This is 148th in a series spotlighting pigs from the Big Pig Gig Public Art Project taking place in Cincinnati, Covington and Newport. Find past pig profiles at cincinnati.com.

Jimmy Buffett has his eye on this pig. The Mayor of Margaritaville saw Elvis Pigsley in the lobby of the Cincinnatian Hotel, where he stayed this year, and asked to buy it. No, he doesn't want to attend the pig auction — and the pig's sponsors want to auction it, splitting the proceeds between ArtWorks and the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Cincinnati.

Artist: Michael Beeghly, graphic designer at FRCH Worldwide, a design firm. Mr. Beeghly also designed the Cincinnati Reds pig, A Slide of Ham, done in collaboration with Bev Kirk. Other pigs created by FRCH artists are Albert Swinestein, Watt A Pig! and Reginald, Dressed to the Swines.

This pig's pen: Cincinnatian Hotel lobby, Sixth and Vine streets.

You were inspired by: I'm an Elvis fan. Who isn't?

What's the pig idea? I made him in his most “porkulent” Las Vegas period. I thought that was appropriate.

You want people to look at this pig and think: Elvis is alive and well and living in Delhi. I saw him.

Completing the project took: Too long.

What's the matter? Fiberglass and Bondo and more Bondo. We had a team of people in the office working in our pig workshop in the basement of our building. At one time we had five pigs in process. I had never worked in fiberglass, so I had a lot of help from other people in the office, including Michael Chaney and others who wish to be anonymous.

HAMMY AWARDS
You have 'til Friday to cast your vote in our Hammy awards. As of press time, we had received 447 ballots; the leaders, by category, were: Styler Davidson Sowtain (Ham-Town Hero); Piggest Show on Earth (Best Hog Call); Pigtoria's Secret (Biggest Ham); Ms. Penciline (Best Pig's Feat); Styler Davidson Sow-tain (Vintage Swine)
Your high on the hog was: Doing all the reserach on Elvis and making his hair, grinding away at his head with a Dremel tool.

Pig peeve: Trying to breathe through a mask in the middle of summer with all the dust and the fumes was tough, but the most difficult part was that I made myself listen to all of Elvis' songs while I was working.

Best pig tale: I heard that when 'NSync was in town this summer they had their picture taken with Elvis. Now Jimmy Buffett wants to buy him.

My favorite pork dish: Barbecued ribs at Walt's Hitching Post. That's the kind of joint Elvis would really appreciate ... along with Elvis' favorite, fried bananas and peanut butter sandwiches.

If your pig starred in a movie, who would you cast to play the role? Mickey Esposito.
