High School Highlights

Oak Hills hot early in GMC golf

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Senior Kenton Hobbs shot a three-under par 69 to power Lakota West to an eight-stroke lead over Oak Hills after the first day of the Greater Miami Conference Tournament at Hueston Woods.

The Firebirds shot a 305 with Oak Hills at 313 followed by Fairfield and Hamilton. The final 18 holes will be played today, also at Hueston Woods.

“It will require some good golf to overcome Lakota West,” Fairfield coach Steve Kessler said. “It's tough coming back on a course like Hueston Woods.”

Hobbs was medalist the first day last year, but failed to finish in the top five. “Kenton is a senior and wants to make up for last year,” Kessler said.         GIRLS GOLF: Lakota West continued its stranglehold over the rest of the Greater Miami Conference. The Firebirds extended their impressive string of four straight league titles with a 40-stroke margin over second place Middletown.

Lakota West golf coach Bev Lyon extended her string of league titles to eight, dating back to the start of league play in the GMC. Lyon returned the entire team from last season's league championship team.

“I'm glad the girls are as successful as they have been,” Lyon said.

Carling Coffman of Middletown earned medalist honors with a two-round total of 158. Ana Brown (164), Ashley Williams (179), Ashley Welker (184) and Heidi Worpenborg (188) all finished with the top ten for Lakota West.
