Milford boys surprise Lakota West

Eagles tie No. 5 team in state, 1-1

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Earning a spot in the Ohio state soccer poll has become a bad omen for some Cincinnati teams.

Monday, St. Ursula lost to Ursuline after being voted No.1 in the girls poll. Tuesday, the Lakota West boys, voted No.5 in the Division I state poll, tied Milford 1-1.

“Maybe this game is something that will turn the season around,” Milford coach Tom Kilgore said.

Mike Hessel scored from 50 yards out with 6:30 remaining for a 1-0 Milford lead.

Lakota West defender John Felini, who moves up on corner kicks, headed in a kick from Matt Fuller with 1:41 remaining for the tie.

In another Greater Miami Conference game, Colerain and Fairfield also tied 1-1.

Colerain had a chance to tie on a penalty kick with three minutes remaining. But Fairfield goalie Glenn Neidlinger made a diving save.

Jesse King scored two goals, including the game winner midway through the second half, to lead Loveland to a 3-1 victory over Lebanon in FAVC Cardinal Division action.

For the fourth consecutive season, the score of the Moeller-Covington Catholic game ended 1-0. A goal by Nathan McCall, assisted by Kent Walker, gave Moeller the victory.

Three-time defending Southern Buckeye Conference champion Batavia took a big step toward a fourth title with a 3-0 victory over Bethel-Tate. Brian Hennessey scored two goals for the Bulldogs.

Rob Nicholl scored twice late in the game to give Seven Hills a 2-0 victory over McNicholas. Sophomore goalie David Schuh recorded his fourth shutout in five games.

Wyoming remained in a tie for first place in the Cincinnati Hills League with a 3-1 victory over Finneytown. Drew Kaszubski scored all three goals, two during the final 10 minutes.
