Team teaching debuts at schools

        MORROW — When students at Little Miami intermediate and junior high schools tackle the topic of fossils this year, the learning won't end in science class. The topic will trickle into math class and language arts, too.

        That's because the school district is employing team teaching for the first time, said Ruth Mitchell, district director of curriculum and instruction.

        Two- to five-member teacher teams will have hour-long planning periods every day to coordinate curriculum, Ms. Mitchell said.

        For example, if a science teacher on a team is covering fossils, a social studies team teacher might teach land formations. Students then might write a composition in their language arts class about what they learned on the topics.

        Team teachers will also have the opportunity to discuss the progress of individual students and plot their developmental needs during their regular sessions.

        “These teachers will be together every day to see how students are doing and address concerns,” Ms. Mitchell said.

        Theresa Elliott, a fifth-grade social studies teacher at Little Miami Intermediate School, said she's looking forward to the collaboration. On a day Ms. Elliott is tackling a challenging topic, she likes that she can borrow class time from teachers on her team.

        “You can get a little deeper into your content area,” Ms. Elliott said.
