'Split routine' worked for actor

        When Jay Mohr had to get in shape for the 1997 film Picture Perfect, he called Robert Kramer for help.

        In six weeks he dropped “a good 7 or 8 percent body fat,” Mr. Kramer said. “That's not typical, but it shows you what you can do if you set your mind to it — when you've got some motivation, some short-term goal.”

        As with all his clients, Mr. Kramer emphasized the core exercises — the ones with compound movements that work several muscles, such as squats, lunges and bench presses.

        Since Mr. Mohr was under such a stringent time constraint, Mr. Kramer implemented what is called a split routine, which is more typical of body builders. Many days he would work out for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening, with “a lot of massages” to speed up his recovery time.
