FORT MITCHELL — Beechwood acted like it had lost Saturday's St.Luke Hospital's Champions Bowl game. The Tigers beat Inez Sheldon Clark 21-6, their 43rd straight win at Edgar McNab Field. But coach Mike Yeagle found little to like.

“We're not in very good shape, not at all,” Yeagle said. “We've got to get busy. It's my fault; I'm the head coach.”

Added senior tailback Nick Sketch, who scored a touchdown: “We pretty much survived. They took it to us.”

Sheldon Clark's wishbone offense outgained Beechwood 314 yards to 241 yards. The Cardinals ran 35 times for 273 yards to the Tigers' 158, Sheldon Clark senior Moe Spradlin carried the ball 13 times for 154 yards, and the defense intercepted Beechwood quarterback Mike Nie (8-of-19, 96 yards) three times.

“They had us guessing on the line,” Sketch said.

The Beechwood defense did hold Sheldon Clark to 43 yards in the second half. It sacked Cardinals senior quarterback Kendrick Damron seven times, and Tigers senior lineman Chad Keith scooped a fumble and took off for a 58-yard score with 10:33 left in the game.

“We tried to bring more people, but we were so tired, and it's one of them deals,” Yeagle said. “I want to go home, watch some film and talk about them Monday.”

Beechwood made a key goal-line stand, halting Sheldon Clark at the 6 when Ben Delong intercepted Nie's pass.

Senior Kyle Boyle sacked Damron for an 8-yard loss to end Sheldon Clark's next drive, and Beechwood started a 75-yard scoring drive capped by Sketch's 6-yard run with 3:21 left in the first quarter.

Damron led Sheldon Clark's only scoring drive. Sophomore Danny Sparks scored from 4 yards out with 8:31 left in the half, but Damron's 28-yard run the play before kept things moving.

Two mistakes cost Sheldon Clark any chance at the upset.

The first came when Beechwood's Brett Weber recovered a Sparks fumble, which sophomore Kevin Martella turned into a 3-yard TD with 2:09 to go.

With the ball on the Beechwood 35, Sheldon Clark tried to set up a screen pass, and Spradlin was open. But Boyle forced Damron to fumble, and Keith picked up the ball at the Beechwood 42 and went untouched.
