By Dave Schutte

Elder, a team with a proven running game but an unproven quarterback, picked up nine first-place votes to edge Moeller for the No.1 spot in The Enquirer's Divisions I-II preseason football poll.

Last year's poll champion, St.Xavier, was No.3, followed by Fairfield and Lakota West.
Purcell Marian was voted No.1 in Divisions III-VI with Badin, Wyoming, Mariemont and Indian Hill all receiving first-place votes to round out the top five.
Elder coach Doug Ramsey said he was surprised at the outcome of the voting, pointing to Moeller, St.Xavier and Fairfield as more likely No.1 candidates.
We have a new quarterback, new receivers and a new tight end and only two offensive linemen back, Ramsey said. We also have four new guys in the defensive secondary.
A passing team the past three years, Elder may not throw as much, because of the return of tailback Kyle Koester, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound senior who rushed for 1,153 yards in 1999.
Senior Matt Scholl has won the starting quarterback position. A 6-2, 175-pounder, Scholl saw limited action in 1999, completing four of six passes.
If Purcell Marian holds on to its No.1 ranking, it will be the Cavaliers' offense that gets it done.
Three-year starting quarterback Adam White has a great supporting cast, with running backs Justin Blackley and Vince Berry returning, along with a veteran line.
