WLWT hires Rashid successor

By John Kiesewetter
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WLWT has hired Indianapolis news anchor Ann Marie Tiernon to replace Norma Rashid.

Ms. Tiernon, the 5:30 p.m. co-anchor on WISH-TV (Channel 8), will be paired with Dave Wagner on Channel 5's early and late news starting Sept. 11.

“She's a terrific person and anchor. She's very bright,” says Rabun Matthews, Channel 5 general manager.

The 8 1/2-year Indianapolis TV veteran will know her way around parts of the Tristate. She spent many summers with her grandmother, Anna Pschesang, in Milford. Her sister, Amy Buccholz, is a Mount Lookout physical therapist.

And her husband, Terry Tiernon, has reported to Miller Brewing's regional sales office at 312 Walnut St., downtown, for six years.

“We've made many trips down to see my sister and my grandmother, and do Tall Stacks, Reds game and Kings Island,” she says.

Ms. Tiernon, 35, has two daughters, Emma, 6, and Grace, 16 months.

The Fort Wayne high school graduate earned a finance degree from Indiana University, and spent two years working in the business world for Baxter International. Then she earned a master's degree in broadcast journalism from Northwestern University.

She began her TV career as a general assignment reporter at WMBD-TV in Peoria, Ill. She has been a reporter and weekend anchor for WISH-TV.

The hiring of Ms. Tiernon completes the overhaul of Channel 5 news.

Meteorologist Angelique Frame is the senior member of the late-night team with 19 months tenure. Mr. Wagner was hired last September, and sports anchor Ken Broo returned to Channel 5 in February.

Ms. Rashid, 44, left the station on March 14. She sued Channel 5 in April claiming she had been terminated for reasons of age, sex and disability discrimination.

The station has denied that Ms. Rashid was fired, and has counter-sued her in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

Ms. Rashid had been Channel 5's primary co-anchor for 17 years, even before former mayor Jerry Springer was named anchor in 1984. Her three-year contract was to expire in December.

Blue's clue: The star of Nickelodeon's Blue's Clues gets a new playmate next month — a playful kitten named Periwinkle. Nickelodeon lets the cat out of the bag at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 25.

Parents also should write down Oct. 3 in their Handy-Dandy Notebook. That's the release date for Blue's Big Musical Movie, a new home video and DVD. It's the first musical program for Blue, Shovel, Pail, Mailbox, Tickety Tock the clock, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper — and Periwinkle.

HBO huddle: Retired Miami quarterback Dan Marino will debut Aug. 31 as a co-host of HBO's Inside the NFL with Cris Collinsworth, Len Dawson, Nick Buoniconti and Jerry Glanville.
