Dusing, Wales miss cut in 100 free

But swim again in 100 butterfly

By Jeff Carlton
The Cincinnati Enquirer

INDIANAPOLIS — If this were a Hollywood story, then Villa Hills' Nate Dusing and Cincinnati's Dod Wales would have grown up bitter rivals, discovering who was the better man in a finals showdown with a berth in the Olympics at stake.

But this is a Cincinnati story transplanted to Indianapolis, and there's not much bitterness or even a semblance of a rivalry between these two men. And after their swims in the 100 freestyle Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Swim Trials, there won't be any dramatic final race either.

Wales, a St.Xavier graduate, swam a disappointing 50.57 in the morning preliminary heat, good for 21st place but not good enough to qualify for the semifinals. Dusing, of Covington Catholic, advanced with a 50.18, but his 50.04 in the semi wasn't fast enough for today's finals.

“I didn't know how I would handle this race after the excitement of (Friday night),” said Dusing, who finished sixth in the 200 freestyle and probably will go to Sydney as part of a relay. “My time would have sent me to the Olympics in 1996. Eleventh in the United States isn't so bad.”

Wales declined to be interviewed after his race. He will swim Monday in the 100 butterfly, his best event and the same one his father swam when he won bronze at the 1968 Olympics.

Dusing will swim that event, too.

“I was a little surprised not to see Dod here,” Dusing said after the 100 free semis. “I'm sure he'll come back and have a great fly.”
