Father and Son Clay Court Tennis

Peckskamps only local team to reach quarters

By Dave Schutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati's John D. and John Peckskamp advanced to today's quarterfinals of the National Father and Son Clay Court Championship at the Cincinnati Tennis Club.

They will meet two-time defending champions Charles R. and Charles H. Hoeveler at 9a.m.

Although the Peckskamps were the only Cincinnati team that advanced to the quarterfinals, the Anderson Township duo of Dan and Brian Bailey remain alive in the losers bracket.

In a first-round match, the Peckskamps dominated Paul and Kurt Palmer (Rye, N.Y.) 6-1, 6-2 in less than 45 minutes. They returned three hours later to defeat the Baileys 6-2, 6-1.

“John played well and I didn't have to do a lot today,” John D. Peckskamp, 48, said. “He served exceptionally well and had some nice volleys.”

The scouting report the Baileys had was to attack 25-year-old John, a teaching pro at the Cincinnati Tennis Club.

“We went after John, but he played well,” 27-year-old Brian Bailey said. “In the first match (a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Albert and Shane Khanlarian), we played well. The Peckskamps were much better.”

The younger Peckskamp was impressed with the play of his father, the No.2-ranked 45-and-over player in the U.S.

“Dad is tough and played extremely well,” John Peckskamp said. “Every team tries to find the other's weaknesses, but I have no weaknesses. My volley suffered last year and my serve was inconsistent, but I corrected both.”

The Hoevelers were also impressive, defeating Craig and Patrick Bouchard 6-2, 6-1. They followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hugh and Alex Thomson.

“I think we played the Hoevelers one time several years ago,” John D. Peckskamp said. “The match was on grass and they won. (My son) John likes the clay better, and we'll try to give them a match.”

There were two upsets Friday: The No.5 team of Jeff and Kyle True (Bowling Green, Ky.) and No.6-seeded Jav and Kurt Morgan (Inverness, Ill.) were eliminated from the winners bracket.

As a result, the Trues and Morgans play at 9a.m. today in the losers bracket.

The championship is at 2 p.m. Sunday.
