Superintendent learns system

Finneytown leader starts Aug. 1

By Jennifer Mrozowski
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SPRINGFIELD TWP. — He hasn't “officially” begun working here, but Finneytown Local School District's new superintendent is already on the job.

Sam Martin's start date is Aug. 1. However, he's been in the area for more than a month familiarizing himself with the school system and can't wait for school to begin, he said.

“The Cincinnati area is a progressive area for education,” Mr. Martin said. “Schools here are on the cutting edge.”

Mr. Martin replaces Donald Schmidt, who retired June 30 after serving as superintendent for 15 years. Mr. Schmidt will be a consultant for Hamilton County in the area of curriculum and continuous improvement plans.

Mr. Martin, an Ohio educator for 26 years, spent the last seven as superintendent of the Buckeye Valley Local School District just north of Columbus.

Before that, he was assistant superintendent of Delaware City Schools in Dela ware, Ohio; superintendent of East Knox Local Schools in Howard, Ohio; and elementary principal at Highland Local Schools in Morrow County, north of Columbus.

Finneytown Board President Roger Wright said more than 20 people applied for the position. The board hired the Ohio School Boards Association to assist in the search, which included professional screenings, two rounds of interviews and background checks.

The board's original set of candidates was whittled to three, who were brought in for extensive interviewing. But the board did not hire any of those.

“Everybody said we were looking for a good fit for our district,” Mr. Wright said. “There were people there that were qualified, but they were not right for Finneytown.”

The board then solicited the help of OSBA for additional candidates. Mr. Martin was among those.

Mr. Wright said Mr. Martin is from a similar district in which community involvement was at the forefront. The board also was impressed with the new superintendent's emphasis on technology, Mr. Wright said.

He said he doesn't plan to make any changes soon in Finneytown because the system seems to be successful.

Mr. Martin's annual salary will be $102,000.
