Gold Star ChiliFest chili cook-off winner Kirby Major Dunaway learned Saturday that being a champion doesn't make you invincible.
The Eastgate area resident was unloading equipment from his pickup truck Saturday night after the 700 WLW Greater Cincinnati Firefighters Chili Cook-off contest and dropped a wheelbarrow on his shin.
Mr. Dunaway had been using the wheelbarrow to transport a grill, chairs and other equipment to and from the contest at Yeatman's Cove.
The accident sent the cook-off champion to the emergency room at Mercy Hospital Anderson, where he received 15 stitches.
It was a pretty good gash, Mr. Dunaway said. I should've been smarter.
Mr. Dunaway is a seven-time ChiliFest cook-off winner and has been competing since the late 1980s. He has won the contest five out of the past six years, he said.
His secret ingredients are three types of meat and I drink a lot of beer when I make it, he said, jokingly.
The accident won't stop Mr. Dunaway from competing next year, he said.
But the day wasn't all bad. Mr. Dunaway took home $300 and two trophies for his win, in addition to the big gash on his shin.
