The Cincinnati Enquirer
CRESCENT SPRINGS, Ky. A 13-year-old Florence boy stole a car in Covington Sunday and led police on a chase southbound on Interstate 75 before colliding with a BMW on Buttermilk Pike, police said.
The front end of the stolen late-model Cadillac burst into flames after it knocked down a metal sign post and struck a chain-link fence.
It came to rest in a grassy area near the Buttermilk Pike interchange.
The teen driver, who was not injured, was charged with assault and other charges. His name was not released because of his age.
The driver of the other vehicle, Richard Markovic, 27, Crescent Springs, was in stable condition Sunday night in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, South.
The 13-year-old fits the description of a teen seen driving a stolen late-model Cadillac in Covington the previous Sunday, police said.
Kind of disbelief, Covington Police Sgt. Bryan Allen said of his reaction after finding out the car thief's age. He handled the car better than some of us. ... He knows how to drive a car.
The incident started about 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of 5th and Main streets in Covington, when Sgt. Allen noticed a car alarm going off. in a Cadil lac.
Second later, the car backed into another parked car and took off.
The teen had broken a rear window to gain entry to the Cadillac and apparently hot-wired it to get it started, Sgt. Allen said.
It only took him about 30 seconds to break into the car and get it started, he said.
The 13-year-old was charged as a juvenile with assault, two counts of wanton endangering and fleeing and eluding, Sgt. Allen said.
Police spotted a teen matching his description last Sunday driving a late-model Cadillac stolen from a Florence auto dealer lot.
