Boy, 4, shot while playing with gun

The Cincinnati Enquirer

MIDDLETOWN — A 4-year-old boy was shot in the cheek Sunday while he and his 8-year-old brother were playing with a handgun in their Mohawk Street home, police said.

Brandon Proffitt was transported to Children's Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, where he was listed in fair condition, police said.

Police and fire personnel responded to the residence in the 3100 block of Mohawk about 3:46 p.m. for a report of a child shot with a pellet gun. But an investigation revealed the child had been shot with a .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol that he and his older brother had found under a bed.

The two boys were handling the weapon in a second-floor bedroom when it discharged, police said. The mother, Lisa Proffitt, told police she was in the basement and unaware of the shooting until she returned upstairs.

The incident remains under investigation by Middletown police.
