Plan to revamp schools offered

        The much-anticipated recommendation to revamp most Cincinnati public high schools to give them distinct specialties was presented Monday night to the district's board as a way to improve students' performance.

        If approved, the restructuring would bring a new educational model to five high schools — Aiken, Taft, Western Hills, Withrow and Woodward. Walnut Hills, the School for Creative and Performing Arts, Hughes Center and Clark Montessori would not be part of the restructuring.

        “The board has not had time to digest this,” board member Lynn Marmer said, adding that a more formal presentation was needed. Although the board didn't discuss the plan at the meeting, Superintendent Steven Adamowski praised the plan developed by the High School Restructuring Committee, a group of parents, teachers, administrators and community representatives that has been meeting since August.

        “I think you have taken some complicated issues that others might have thought were insurmountable and given us a light at the end of the tunnel ... in terms of bringing real improvement to our high-school program,” he said.

        No implementation of the proposal is expected before the 2001-02 school year.

        In place of the status quo — large high schools where students tend to get lost in the crowd — the committee recommends smaller high schools that could fit within existing high-school buildings, Associate Superintendent Kathleen Ware said. Each core high school in this new design would have a total enrollment of about 600 students organized into two components, a preparatory academy for ninth- and 10th-graders and a senior institute for juniors and seniors.

        Tenth-graders would have to meet certain standards to advance to a senior institute, which would focus on core academic requirements corresponding with Ohio's 12th-grade proficiency tests.
