ERLANGER — Bishop Brossart never had won a boys regional track meet — until Saturday.

But The Mustangs' 148-98 win over St. Henry at Lloyd for the Class A Region 4 championship was the latest justification for Brossart's No.2 ranking behind Harrodsburg in the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association poll.

Seniors Jarrod Schmidt and Sean McCauley say it's about time people take notice.

“We've just done this for ourselves,” McCauley said. “Winning is an added bonus.”

Schmidt and McCauley were the main reasons Brossart won Saturday.

Schmidt won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs and helped the Mustangs win the 3,200 relay. Saturday was only the fourth time all year he had competed in the 1,600.

McCauley was third in the 800 and 1,600 and also was part of the 3,200 relay team.

“I still say the 800 is my favorite,” Schmidt said. “But I have to share the love.”

Brossart's girls, the three-time defending Class A state champions, completed the Mustangs' sweep. They defeated St. Henry 174-159.5.

Brossart didn't clinch the meet until late, when sophomore Megan Uebel and freshman Jessica Lloyd finished 1-2 in the triple jump. Junior Jennifer Hartig and sophomore Christy Studer, scored 18 more points by taking the top two spots in the pole vault.

In individual events, St. Henry senior Jeff Topmiller won the long jump with a leap of 20-33/4, to go with his triple-jump and high-jump titles from Friday.
