Elder repeats state volleyball title

The Cincinnati Enquirer

The Elder Panthers repeated as Division I state volleyball champions with a 15-5, 16-14 win over Walsh Jesuit in the finals.

“We felt comfortable coming into the finals because we hadn't lost,” Elder coach Tom Silbernagel said. “We had some rough spots in the semis and the finals, but we have 10 seniors, and with that kind of leadership, I knew we'd be in good hands.”

Behind the play of seniors Mike Wauligman, Alex Vogt, and Nick Gergen, the Panthers pulled through in the finals.

Wauligman, named tournament MVP, was the catalyst, amassing 26 kills, six blocks and four aces in the finals. Gergen added 57 assists, Vogt had 11 kills and eight blocks, and junior Chris Moorman had nine aces.

“We come from a tough league and that prepared us better,” Silbernagel said.
