Hillary Clinton comes back to Cincinnati for more money
By Howard Wilkinson
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Hillary Rodham Clinton will make her second trip to Cincinnati in six months Tuesday to raise money for her New York Senate campaign.
The first lady and U.S. Senate candidate will go to the Anderson Township home of Cincinnati lawyer Richard Lawrence for a $1,000 per person fund-raising event.
Mr. Lawrence, who has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Democratic Party on the national level during the Clinton years, will co-host the event with Cincinnati lawyer Stan Chesley. Mr. Chesley and his daughter, Lauren Chesley Cohen, held fund-raiser for Mrs. Clinton in December.
No public events are scheduled for Mrs. Clinton.
Mr. Chesley and Mr. Lawrence have been formidable fund-raisers for the Democratic National Committee and other Democratic federal campaign committees, raising millions as co-hosts at a series of events held at Mr. Chesley's Amberley Village home events that have featured President Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.
In the 2000 election cycle, Mr. Lawrence and his company, The Lawrence Firm, have donated nearly $100,000 to candidates for federal offices and party committees, including $75,000 from his law firm to the DNC.
Mr. Lawrence and his wife, Diana, each gave the maximum $1,000 donation to Mrs. Clinton's Senate campaign committee in December. In addition, Mr. Lawrence donated $5,000 to the New York State Democratic Party's Senate Campaign Fund.
Mr. Lawrence could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Mrs. Clinton held a lead in the polls over New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani when Mr. Giuliani dropped out of the race last week, saying he could not campaign for the Senate and receive treatment for prostate cancer at the same time.
Rick Lazio, a Republican congressman from Long Island, immediately jumped into the race.
It's a different race now; there will be different issues and different demographics, said Mr. Chesley.
