Memorial Day observances
Hamilton: Parade on Monday will begin at 10 a.m. at Front and Court streets. It will proceed east on Court, north on Third, east on High, north on 10th and east on Heaton, ending at Greenwood Cemetery. A memorial service on the GAR lot of the cemetery will follow, with George Hofmann, adjunct history professor at the University of Cincinnati, as keynote speaker.
At 10:15 a.m. vintage aircraft operated by the Cincinnati Warbirds will fly over the parade route. There also will be a memorial service at Rose Hill Cemetery at 2 p.m.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., costumed volunteers will be on hand at the cabin next to the Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument.
Boy and Girl Scouts will assist veterans groups in placing U.S. flags on veterans' graves throughout Butler County. Anyone wanting to place a flag can obtain them at all cemetery offices, veterans organizations and the Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument today and Saturday. Anyone wishing to help can call 867-5823.
Middletown: A parade, sponsored by the Middletown Area Memorial Association, will begin at 10 a.m. Monday and will travel from Smith Park to Woodside Cemetery. Lineup will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Wilbraham Road entrance to Smith Park. The parade -- which will move from Smith Park, up Tytus Avenue to Verity Parkway, then south on Verity to Woodside -- will consist of veterans groups, high-school bands, and a bagpipe drum and bugle corps from the Canadian Legion.
Memorial services will be conducted at Woodside at 11:30 a.m. Robert Hale, commander of VFW Post 3809, will be the guest speaker.
Monroe: A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Monday, at Mound Cemetery on Main Street.
Union Township: A parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Union Elementary School on Cincinnati-Dayton Road and end at Brookside Cemetery, behind the West Chester Town Hall, with services to follow. Guest speaker will be Air Force Brig. Gen. Jack Ihle. The Buffalo Soldiers will march for the first time in more than 50 years.
