Bank robberies up this year

By Jane Prendergast
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Another robber stole money from a Cincinnati bank Thursday, pushing the area's bank-robbery total past that of all last year.

A man went into the Provident Bank branch in Pleasant Ridge about 11:30 a.m. and indicated he had a gun. He got some cash and ran out of the bank, pulling off the 29th bank heist so far this year. That tops 1999's total of 28.

And so far, most of the robbers have been successful in avoiding arrest. Authorities have captured suspects in six of the 29, with three of the robberies attributed to one man.

“We're way up this year,” said Ed Boldt, spokesman for the Cincinnati office of the FBI. “It doesn't tell us much. They're just cyclical.”

In contrast, robbers are less busy in Columbus so far this year. That city had close to 60 heists last year, Mr. Boldt said, but has experienced 21 so far in 2000. The opposite is true in Dayton, which had more than the usual number, he said.

Cincinnati's lowest number in recent years was nine, in 1994.

Cincinnati Police Sgt. Tom Lanter said the police division might offer an educational awareness program for the public.

“We are in the infant stages of talking to the FBI,” he said. “We have previously put on a similar program for bank employees to educate them on things they can do and things to look for.”
